Prog 1111 09/09/98
There’s nothing quite like a re-launch prog although I’m not sure that this qualifies seeing as how each of the thrills is a self contained story. It’s a 48 paged special issue the theme of which is death. When we had the sex issue, the word was plastered in big writing on the cover, but for this prog I just happened to notice from reading the strips. I had to skim read the Nerve Centre for confirmation. In fact, you could be mistaken for perhaps thinking that the theme of this issue is actually Sex from the cover. Just change the colour of the blood dribbling from Durham Red’s mouth and between her cleavage and, well, if you don’t know what I’m implying here then I’m not going to tell you.Labels: Durham Red, Nerve Centre

They had to imply 'death' as a theme? I thought that was every week. I wonder how many progs are out there where nobody dies in the entire issue?

It would have been funny if the dribble had been white and then when you moved down the photo she was actually eating a yoghurt in a messy way with a demented look on her face.
No that's the sort of ironic cover I would have used and hence why I am not editor.

Actually something that annoys me about this cover is that like a lot of Mark Harrison's work you can see which celebrity he has used to photo reference the character. Usually he paints angelina Jolie as red, but here she is Gina Gershon. I had a quick look on google and I could not find the exact pic he copied but hopefully you can see what I mean from this:

I had a similar experience in dissapointment to victor with another non 2000ad artist. (very famous, poss Italian with a name like baliaros, did alot of fantasy paperback covers), whilst undoubtably a great artist, all of his major works were "covers" of life drawings (adding armour and swords etc) but essentally were copies of photos. It took some of the magic away for me, but it's like hearing Mock the Week get all the questions in advance and write the jokes to suit. You kind know but don't want it to be true.
Rose tinted specs back firmly on.

Most artists probably use photo ref at some time but you need to be a little less obvious perhaps.

You mean the guest on Mock the Week think that stuff up in advance? That makes it even worse!
